The Steel Plow
In 1837, John Deere invented the steel plow. He needed something better, something stronger, and something that would last against the hard soils of the Midwest. After some trial and error, he began using a steel saw blade, which led to manufacturing and selling them. He later expanded into selling wagons, corn planters, cultivators, and investing in tractors, harvesters, and more. This is the humble beginning of the John Deere Corporation today that now is a leader in heavy equipment manufacturing, including tractors, loaders, diesel engines, and so much more.
The Steam Engine
The steam engine revolutionized all areas of manufacturing and touched almost every sector which advanced processes, tenfold. Up until the end of the 18th century, the majority of farm work was done by hand. With the invention of the steam engine, agriculture saw its first machines in terms of threshers and powered plows.
The Internal Combustion Engine
Steam engines demanded a lot of water and fuel (coal, wood, or straw) making them extremely high maintenance. So came the internal combustion engine. This engine was invented in the early 1800s and was a viable alternative to steam power by the 1890s.
The internal combustion engine needs a fuel source (most frequently gasoline or diesel fuel), a spark, and air. The engine uses the power of combustion to power the piston, and more to produce work. This process was more fuel-efficient and user-friendly. These engines were put into machines, such as tractors, that could do more work and faster than previously done, setting the stage for the mechanization of American farms that we see today.
