What is propane?

Throughout the United States propane gas is a critical resource used for a multitude of different purposes, including important agricultural businesses. Agfinity is proud to provide this resource for agriculture businesses, farmers, and others across the High Plains — but what is propane exactly? Today we are taking an in-depth look at this type of gas and what it’s used for.

What is it?

In short, propane is a liquefied petroleum gas that is stored in a range of small tanks, 500-gallon, 1,000-gallon, and even 30,000-gallon metal tanks (watch one we just set). While propane gas is odorless on its own, an odor is added in order to detect when it is present. This type of resource is commonly used for cooking (such as barbecuing during the summer), as well as fuel for farm equipment, and for space and water heating. That being said, uses for propane gas are rapidly increasing across the nation thanks to new technological developments.

Where does it come from?

Especially if you run an agribusiness and need fuel for your forklifts or other pieces of equipment, it’s important to know where that type of fuel originates — it’s not just enough to know what propane is.

This type of petroleum gas is primarily the result of natural gas processing on a domestic level, but propane can also be produced during crude oil refinement. In fact, as the United States continues to increase its supply of natural gas, the supply of propane continues to increase. The following National Propane Gas Association infographic does a great job at illustrating the dynamic and evolving world of propane exports.

Agfinity readily supplies individuals from our bulk plant located in Lucerne, Colorado. This location is one of the largest propane supply options in Northern Colorado, which allows us to deliver propane to our customers – even when the demand is high while keeping the resource affordable.

Why choose it?

Now that we’ve gone through what propane is, it’s time to focus on why it is the resource of choice for everyday consumers and agribusiness owners. In fact, its very popularity is what creates a distinction between this and other conventional types of fuel. Particularly for larger agricultural operations that use a lot of propane, this resource is affordable, reliable, and does not pollute the air.
